  6. Sound details.

  8. The sound was recorded during a few minutes of quiet heavy rains and
  9. occasional thunders.  The sound starts off with 1,2 seconds of rain.
  10. Then there is a thunder break lasting for about 2,2 seconds.  The
  11. thunder rolls off into the rain for about 5,6 seconds.  Within these
  12. last seconds you can also hear a faint squeekin' from a door (to the
  13. left in the stereo field).  This is the wind that audio-fies it's
  14. presence via an open door.  (This also helps me identify the sound as
  15. mine......)

  18. Recording and processing details.

  20. This sound was captured with a Sony ECM-979 MS stereo condenser
  21. microphone and recorded directly onto a Sony TCD-D3 portable DAT
  22. recorder.  It was later transferred digitally to an Akai S-1100
  23. equipped with a digital I/O board, and finally to the Amiga via MIDI
  24. sample dump in Samplitude Professional.  Within Samplitude Professional
  25. I decided to increase the overall level digitally since the recording
  26. level was set not to overload in case of really close thunders.  I used
  27. the fade function in Samplitude Professional to increase the level.
  28. Since the recording was done on a DAT, the sampling rate was quiet
  29. high; 48kHz.  I decided to lower this rate to half the speed before I
  30. converted the sound to 8bits.  Now the sound has a frequency of 24.131
  31. Hz.  This was done in order to save space but still keep up with the
  32. high sound quality from the original 16 bit file.  This also ensures
  33. that the soundfile is compatible with Amiga 8bit sound software.  (Many
  34. 8bit programs have problems with *VERY* high playback rates.) Please
  35. beware that Samplitude Professional exports IFF sound with a default
  36. volume setting of 0 (zero).  I haven't changed this.
